Itinerary
When you arrive, you are warmly received and transferred to the hotel for overnight rest. Overnight stay: Cycad Guest House (BB) or The Boma (BB).
After breakfast, we drive westwards birding through the woodlands to Kibale Forest. The drive passes along cultivated fields of bananas, coffee and tea plantations. We make a walk around the lodge as we bird before the sun sets. Interestingly, the evening calls of the birds certainly add to the perfect acoustics of the forest. This park has at least 355 bird species with the highest number of records of the Green-breasted Pitta. Indeed Kibale forest is a healthy habitat with the most primates in Uganda. On this day, we do a true birding nature walk in the park. We expect to search for the various rare birds like the African Pitta, Dusky Long-tailed Cuckoo, Scaly Illadopsis and crested Guinea fowl. Besides these, there is the Red-capped robin Chat, the grey Apalis and white-napped Pigeon. It is also possible go on the trails for chimpanzee trekking (optional). In the afternoon, we make another nature walk in the nearby Bigodi Swamp. Along the trails, we look for the papyrus species such as the papyrus Gonolek and white-winged Warbler. The other species are the African Marsh Harrier, black-billed Turaco and great blue Turaco. More still, the grey Parrot, snowy-crowned robin Chat and the yellow-billed Barbet also fly here. It is also possible to do birding and chimp habituation in the forest (optional). Overnight stay: Kibale Forest Camp (FB) / Primate Lodge (FB)
We transfer to the Queen Elizabeth National Park with splendid views of the Mountains of the Moon. However, we make a stop at the Equator for that memorable time-standing in two hemispheres. We go birding on the afternoon game drive as the sun sets. This Savannah and woodland park ranks the best birding area in Uganda with over 600 species. On the game drive, you are likely to see the Black Bee-eater, Blue and Harlequin Quails, Martial Eagle, Temminck’s courser and Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl. The Yellow-billed Ox-pecker is usually on the back of an antelope, buffalo or even the Warthog. Overnight stay: The Kasenyi Safari Camp (FB) or the Mweya Safari Lodge (FB)
During this morning, we do an early morning bird search along the tracks, west of the national park. This area is famous for grassland birds. After a successful birding excursion, return to the lodge for lunch. We then slope down for the boat cruise along the beautiful Kazinga channel. The boat sails close to the birds that keep on the shores. Many bird species such as the African Skimmer,Pelicans and Kingfishers feed in the water. But others like the common Sandpiper, gray-headed Gull, green backed Heron and three-banded Plover come on the banks to find what to eat. The cruise ends down by Lake Edward. We have a drive as we transfer southwards to the Ishasha sector. Firstly, we check in at the lodge for lunch and relaxation. Later, we do a relaxed sunset birding drive. Out of the ordinary, we search the tree climbing lions as we do our birding. Along the tracks in the bush, we continue up to the river camp. Birds that we may see include the African grey Hornbill, greater Honey-guide, green winged Pytilia and Ovampo Sparrowhawk. Other birds of the grasslands like the rufous-napped Lark, Flappet Lark along with Cisiticolas can be seen. Overnight stay: Ishasha Jungle Lodge (FB) or the Ishasha Wilderness Camp (FB)
Today, we drive to Bwindi Impenetrable national park. During the drive, we bird through wooded and hilly villages. Furthermore, the beautiful landscapes and the mountains have breathtaking views. Uniquely so, Bwindi Impenetrable is a mountanous forest with many wildlife species and birds. Even more interestingly, Bwindi is one of the 2 places in the world where you find the endangered Mountain Gorillas!! Overnight stay: Gorilla Mist Camp (FB) or the Mahogany Springs Lodge (FB)
We set off in early morning in order to do the forest birding. Birds to see along the trails include the African Broadbill, Ashy Flycatcher, Banded Prinia and Black-billed Turaco. Even the bronze-naped Pigeon, chin-spot Batis and red-throated Alethe can be seen. Others are the Oriole Finch, rwenzori Batis, white-bellied Robin chat. In the afternoon, we go birding along the forest edges. It is however possible to do the trekking of Gorillas (optional), while birding on this day!! You can even have an hour with them for an experience of a lifetime . Overnight stay: Gorilla Mist Camp (FB) or the Mahogany Springs Lodge (FB)
We have breakfast and relax. We then drive leisurely through the mountains and cattle countryside to Lake Mburo. There are five lakes within the park. It is mostly woodland. Nonetheless, it harbors beautiful bird species. In addition, big animals in the park include the leopards, hyenas, zebras and the rare Eland antelopes. In the afternoon, we go for a birding drive. Birding along the tracks yields Tabora Cisticola, green-backed Woodpecker, Coqui Francolin and red-faced Barbet. Then, we return to the Lodge to relax. The views of the park below are magnificent. Overnight stay: Rwakobo Rock (FB) or the Mihingo Lodge (FB)
After coffee or tea, we walk in the bushes to search for the birds at close proximity. Without a doubt, it is a thrilling moment while birding in an African park on foot.
