Gorilla groups for tracking in Uganda and Rwanda

In Uganda, Gorilla tracking takes place in Bwindi forest and Mgahinga national park. The Gorilla groups are habituated for tourism in Bwindi forest. These include Mubare, Habiyanja and Rushegura in Buhoma. Bitukura, Oruzogo, Kyaguriro gorilla groups are in Ruhija.

Rushaga has Shongi, Mishaya, Bweza, Rukara, Mikeza and Kahugye gorilla families. The Nkurigo area has the Nkuringo gorilla family.

Two gorilla families for the habituation experience exist in Bwindi forest- Rushaga and Nkuringo.

In Mgahinga national park, there is only the Nyakagezi gorilla family. It is headed by the “big Mark” with 5 other silverbacks.

You can choose the Gorilla group (family) you want to visit. This depends on your level of fitness. Some groups are far deep in the forest while others live nearer. Your Driver/Guide will arrange for you the most appropriate gorilla family with the park office at the briefing point.

In Rwanda, gorilla tracking is done only in Volcanoes national park. There are 10 gorilla families and these include Sabinyo, Susa, Amahoro, Hirwa, Kwitonda, Agasha, Bwengye, Karisimbi, Umubano and Titus.

Chimpanzee tracking in Uganda and Rwanda

In Uganda, chimpanzee tracking can be done in Kibale forest, Kalinzu forest, Budongo forest and Kyambura gorge.

Kibale forest national park is the main chimpanzee habitat. It is a wet tropical forest on the northern side and woodland Savannah on the rift valley floor to the south. 77% of the forested section of the park is occupied by evergreen forest.  There are 13 primate species in Kibale forest including the Chimpanzees, baboons, Poto, red Columbus monkeys, red tailed monkey, Black and white colobus, the L’Hoest’s monkeys andGrey-cheeked Mangabey.

In Rwanda, Chimpanzee tracking is done only in Nyungwe Forest National Park. This is a true rain forest that receives 2,000 mm of rainfall annually. It is one of the oldest forests in Africa with a high level of diversity.
